Members of the Plainfield High School Jazz Ensemble traveled to New York to attend a rehearsal of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. The orchestra was rehearsing "Abyssinian 200: A Celebration", a new composition by Wynton Marsalis commissioned in celebration of the 200th anniversary of The Abyssinian Baptist Church. The piece will be debuted Thursday – Saturday, April 10 -12th, in the Rose Hall at JALC. The performance will be a joint performance of Rev. Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III's Abyssinian Choir and Wynton Marsalis Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
Our students were thrilled and exhilarated by the sounds of the orchestra. They, as usual, represented the greater Plainfield area in fine fashion conducting themselves very maturely, and being very attentive throughout the experience. Mr. Marsalis and the other members of the orchestra were very gracious with our students interacting with them, having a jam session, answering any questions, and offering advice for development. Overall, this was a very successful field trip, one I'm sure our students will not forget.
