Taiwan Brown knows what he wants out of life. Growing up in Plainfield, New Jersey, music inspired him at a young age. In Plainfield, many young people have dreams of pursuing careers in the music industry or professional sports, but Taiwan had a clearly defined goal that he has spent his life working towards; he wants to b e the on-air host of a music channel.
To develop his public speaking skills and on-air personality, Taiwan worked closely with his church's Media Ministry Group. Soon after this experience, he landed an interview with Fuse, a music channel based out of New York City. After an initial interview, Taiwan was called back for a second time. Even though the interview did not lead to a job offer, Taiwan realized he has what it takes to pursue his dream and will never stop believing in himself.
Although Taiwan is interested in the entertainment industry, he has always valued his classroom education. When he entered his senior year of high school, his guidance counselor suggested that he take a Sociology course to help further his understanding of acting and human interaction. Always willing to try new things and broaden his horizons, Taiwan enrolled in Ms. Tiffany Corbett's Sociology course. It was a decision he would not regret.
Ms. Corbett introduced Taiwan to the Overcoming Obstacles program. Taiwan thrived in the classroom environment that Overcoming Obstacles helped create. He finally had the freedom to express his opinions and let his personality shine. He especially enjoyed the lessons on communication, in which he and his classmates had open dialogue about the issues affecting young people in their community.
Taiwan's passion for Overcoming Obstacles motivated Ms. Corbett to include Taiwan in a peer leadership program in which high school seniors visit ninth and sixth grade classrooms to teach students the communication, decision making and goal setting skills they have learned through the Overcoming Obstacles program. Taiwan immediately recognized he had a talent for teaching. He inspired the younger students in this program to constructively express their opinions, recognize the consequences of their decisions, and identify their dreams for the future.
Upon graduating from Plainfield High School in 2006, Taiwan spent the summer working alongside his teacher and mentor, Mr. David Smith, filming and editing a documentary film about the Overcoming Obstacles T.R.U.C.E. Program in Jersey City.
Taiwan currently attends Union County College with a major in Television Production. Taiwan is well on his way to living his dream. He recently hosted a show for MTV's college network, MTVU. He hopes to be able to help produce original programming for networks like PBS, Nickelodeon, Mania TV, and Disney.
