Middle School Curriculum

The middle school science instructional program is based on the premise supported by NSTA that science concepts must be presented in an age-appropriate, engaging manner so that students can build on their prior knowledge and attain the necessary background to participate successfully in our highly scientific and technological society. Students are constantly involved in the exploration and inquiry-based investigation of scientific concepts.

Standards-based curriculum aligned with the National Science Education Standards, the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards, and the Clarification Project is utilized in all middle schools. The curriculum focuses on four strands: Physical Science, Life Science, Earth Science, and Process Skills.

The study of science concepts is incorporated during independent and cooperative experiences for all students. Instruction is integrated with other curriculum subjects in a multidisciplinary approach to ensure that all students are able to master content and connect concepts to real life experiences. Laboratory activities, science kits, content software, and various community resources are used in the implementation of the curriculum. The following courses are taught in all middle schools:

  • 6th Grade-Life Science
  • 7th Grade-Physical Science
  • 8th Grade-Earth Science

Middle School Science Laboratories/Experiments

Standardized laboratories based on the district plan and the environment of the school has been established in all middle schools. Teachers receive regular staff development via meetings or on-site professional development to ensure that proper experiments/hands-on activities are being conducted at least once a week.

Middle School Assessment

Assessment is on going and innovative in all middle schools. These assessments are used for the improvement of instruction. The following assessments are utilized during the school year:

  • Pre & Post Science Content Test
  • Performance-Based Assessments for Laboratory Activities and Concept-Based Units
  • NJASK
  • Acuity

These tests were administered to students to evaluate content knowledge and application of scientific concepts.
